Q&A with Houston Dutch Lions FC’s PDL Player Thomas Verhaar

Former Houston Dutch Lions FC’s PDL Player, Thomas Verhaar, has just signed a 2-year contract with 1st Division Club Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Sparta Rotterdam is looking for a chance to promote next year to the Dutch Eredivisie (Premier League). Thomas Verhaar played last season with the Lions where he was a starter for the PDL Team (9 games; 2 goals and 5 assists). We are proud to see how Thomas has developed himself with the experience he gained playing for the Houston Dutch Lions FC PDL team and making the big step to become a professional soccer player. We asked Thomas some questions about his big step to Sparta Rotterdam.

Thomas Verhaar Houston Dutch LionsQ: First of all congratulations on your 2-year contract with Sparta Rotterdam! When did they get in contact with you?

A: Former Technical Director “Wiljan Vloet” called me in January just to see if I was interested in a transfer to Sparta. There wasn’t much convincing needed because Sparta Rotterdam is the club where I played for years in their Youth Academy, which was a great experience for me. Now coming back to Sparta, I see this is an opportunity for me that I have to grab with both hands.

Q: What is the club’s ambition and what do they expect from you?

A: The club right now plays in the 1st division of the Netherlands and there is a slight chance that they will move on to the Premier League next year. We just have to work hard upcoming season and see if we can improve the level of the team from last year. Sparta wants me to play on the same position that I played for when I was with the Lions last year (right/left winger). I will be a guaranteed addition of the 1st team roster.

Thomas VerhaarQ: What are your own ambitions?

A: My goal is to get a spot in the first starting 11, which I will be working hard for and of course to enjoy the game of soccer as much as I can. If ill make it to the starting 11 of the team, I have enough faith that I can help the team by scoring goals and winning games.

Q: What would you like to share with the HDL FC fans?

A: I had an amazing time last year at HDL FC’s PDL team. I hope this year will be much more exciting and successful for the Lions. I wish all my old teammates and members of the staff all the best of luck for the new season!
